Heather Bornstein

Attorney

Heather graduated cum laude earning her undergraduate degree in Political Science in 2016 from Florida State University. She then earned a Master in Public Health with a focus on Health Policy and Management, from the University of Georgia in 2017. She was then awarded a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 2021.

Heather’s passion for health originated during her undergraduate degree where she was a Research Assistant to Dr. Robert Glueckauf on the ACTS 2 Project (“African American Alzheimer’s Caregiver Training and Support Project). Post undergraduate and while earning her Master in Public Health, Heather completed a capstone project entitled “Combating Obesity in Children and Adolescents Through School Intervention and Active School Transport.” She was also an occupational health intern, where she developed a new, innovative program for a SHARPS program to prevent injuries during research and evaluated procedures on the respiratory protection program to ensure compliance with federal regulations.

While earning her law degree at the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphrey’s School of Law, Heather received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in her Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic course while attending law school where she assisted the low-income population in obtaining legal services. During the COVID pandemic, Heather co-authored a published op-ed in The Daily Memphian entitled “Homeless ranks will grow when renters are evicted” during her time participating in the Advanced Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic. Heather also served as the Director of Events, Vice President, and President of the Health Law Society where she partnered with community members to orchestrate many outreach events. Further, Heather earned pro bono service distinctions and graduated with an Advocacy Certificate. Heather was also a member of the Diversity and Inclusion, LGBTQ+ Committee and was awarded Mentee of the Year in 2021 for the Diversity Mentorship Program.

Heather began her career in rural Kansas, where she gained experience in divorce law, child custody disputes, criminal defense, property law, and trust litigation.

After practicing in rural Kansas, Heather joined a Kansas City law firm as a litigation attorney, where she gained hands-on experience in insurance defense, specifically, but not limited to, medical malpractice defense, dental malpractice defense, legal malpractice defense, trucking and automobile defense litigation, and HIPAA compliance.

In her practice, Heather focuses on concrete results and open communication. Her background in health-related issues adds to her understanding of the complexity involved in its litigation.

Heather is licensed in Kansas, Missouri, and Tennessee.
